The November, 2002 Elections: The majority of the representatives in the Vermont House are anti-civil union. The margin of our pro-civil union majority in the Senate, in the meantime, is only two votes. A loss of as few as two pro-civil union seats in the Senate would erase the pro-civil union majority in the Senate. If that happened, and we did not pick up over a dozen pro-civil union seats in the House, some families in Vermont could once again be vulnerable, and the legal rights of Vermont's gay and lesbian citizens threatened, as repeal of the civil union law would be a strong possibility. For more information about other organizations working to support candidates who will protect all familes in Vermont, you can visit www.vermontfundforfamilies.org
i wouldn't say it is over just yet or that they are not being taken serious

There is no way a Constitutional Amendment can be kept "quiet." Any such amendment would have to be ratified by (as I recall) 3/4 of all the states before it becomes law.
it takes 2/3
of the REPRESENTATIVES IN CONGRESS to ammend the constitution not the states, these reps are the ones that vote not the people and it takes 51% majority to pass a BILL
so even if the constitution is not ammended it could potentially raise problems for unmarried heteros as homos alike, follow the ACLU link i posted for Xander
one more thing, although 'quiet' it has stirred up enough controversy to catch the attention of the ACLU and raise close to 500,000 signatures at the petition my initial post linked everyone to, aside from the letters the senators and house reps have recieved, both through http://www.aclu.org/action/marriage107.html adn private emails,

ban on gay marriages bill now in congress .
hey Flip
thanks for asking, i can hope i can answer some of these for you,
Why would Congress or any one else want to ban Gay marriages in the first place, other than for conservative religious reasons, cultural bias or fear of supposed social decay and assumed loss of votes?
i believe you answered this yourself, it is conservative moral values and fear of the unknown, it is backwoods thinking in the part of the house and senate and the fear behind it is fueled by prejudice. sad but true
What are the intrinsic and, if at all, financial reasons why Gay’s would want to be recognized as being married if some choose to remain childless, other than giving a reason such as, ‘men and women get to be…so do we’?
why do straight people get married? and do all married couples have children?
love tends to be the underlying factor of most happy marriages,
not all marriages are done so for financial gain,
What is meant by homosexual marriages/civil unions (specifically civil unions? Why the connection between the two terms? What is meant by domestic partner benefits?
The Civil Union Law: In 2000, the Vermont legislature passed a groundbreaking law which created a new marital status called "civil union" for same-sex couples and provided all state law benefits of marriage to couples joined in civil union.
{check out www.vtfreetomarry.org. for more info}
the reversal of this law as is the plan if congress has its way, would take these rights away from these couples and prevent other states from joining in and doing the same as vermont did 2 years ago,
it would also prevent employers and insurance companies from providing coverage to same sex couples in their benefit plans,
if it is ratified it can affect hetero couples as well, who choose not to marry
an example mentioned at ACLU is state laws protecting unmarried elderly couples who refrain from marrying in order to hold on to their pensions,
and even state laws allowing a person, in the absence of a spouse, to oppose the autopsy of a close friend because of the deceased person's religious beliefs
from my own personal standpoint:
suzi and i have been living together for about a year now,
as the law currently stands, unless we live together for 5 years and become 'common law' we are not recognized as a couple by law,
if this new bill takes place we would not be recognized as common law even if we did live together for the next 50 years,
thus abolishing any rights suzi would have over my last requests if i were to die, unless i specifically wrote it down in a will
Is there a potential governmental financial benefit, i.e. tax deductions for Gay married partners who will be without the responsibility or the expense of having to raise children? Are there significant differences of perspective between Gay’s who have the responsibility of raising children and Gay’s without the responsibility of raising children that want to marry and the heterosexual marriages that raise children and those you choose to remain childless?
as far as children are concerned one does not need to be married to have a child, nor should someone get married because they are expecting one,
at the moment suzi and i choose not to have kids because we have plans for our future, that is a personal decision that works for us as a straight couple and it is a choice that gay couples should have too, if we change our mind in the future then we cross the bridge when we get there. no one should be penalized or rewarded for having kids the joy of having a family is reward and punishment enough for giving birth
what it comes down to is this:
when this nation was founded it was founded with the premise of seperation of church and state as to avoid the opression felt in the motherland. if the churches are progressive enough to accept same sex matrimony then it is the churches choice and not the government,
marriage is a civil liberty and it is a choice 2 individuals make based on their feelings toward each other regardless of their sexual orientation
what they are proposing with this bill ALSO includes a future ammendment to the constitution
this is the direction this legislation is going, they want to ammend the constitution to only allow heterosexual marriages to exist,
if this civil right is taken it is only a step away before the government starts telling us who people can marry and who they can't

it is understandable that we americans feel an almost reflexive need for unanimity in trying times like these.

check out this site and do a google search on ethanol for more information, then make your own assesment, i don't know much on this subject but this may help you
http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/ethanol/ethanol.html
a quote from the site that i found interesting
"Much ethanol not intended for drinking is now made synthetically, either from acetaldehyde made from acetylene, or from ethylene made from petroleum. Ethanol can be oxidized to form first acetaldehyde and then acetic acid. It can be dehydrated to form ether. Butadiene, used in making synthetic rubber, may be made from ethanol, as can chloroform and many other organic chemicals. Ethanol is used as an automotive fuel by itself and can be mixed with gasoline to form gasohol. Ethanol is miscible (mixable) in all proportions with water and with most organic solvents. It is useful as a solvent for many substances and in making perfumes, paints, lacquer, and explosives. Alcoholic solutions of nonvolatile substances are called tinctures; if the solute is volatile, the solution is called a spirit."
granted that it may not answer your question. but the idea that a synthetic is derrived from petroleum seems wasteful IMO

Ban on Gay Marriages Bill Now in Congress
There is a Constitutional Amendment being proposed that will ultimately ban homosexual marriages/civil unions and possibly domestic partner benefits in the future. It is being pushed through Congress quickly so as to make as little noise as possible. There's so much else in the news right now, that the amendment is not being
noticed.
This petition is being organized by a second party - it's NOT an
"add your name to the bottom and forward" kind of thing. Go to the site itself in order to sign the petition. Please pass this along to your friends and family, and to our straight allies.
By doing so, we can convey the message that the Constitution is
about human rights, not just "religious rights". No matter how you feel about marriage...
PLEASE READ, SIGN, AND FORWARD ON...

In the last 20 years we have made tremendous strides in solar, wind, and hydrogen based energy sources. As I pointed out earlier, wind energy used to cost more than ten times as much as fossil fuel energy. We have narrowed that gap to less than 1.5 times as much here in the States. In Europe, wind energy is more than cost effective, is being used widely, and the use is growing. ---LARC
thank you larc for your generous input, as to this is where i am going with my reason for posting the letter, all that money that the US government will set up to drill in the arctic, if indeed such a bill goes through IMO should be pumped into the programs as such that are making a difference,
if 'patriotism' is the masquerade for pushing such a bill so as to not endorse 'terrorists' then perhaps we can follow california's example and "make dramatic cuts in energy use by launching the most successful statewide conservation campaign in history" this time making it national,
i believe this is what we here in the country should be asking our senators to pass and perhaps even include a tax incentive to make it all the more lucrative if we reach a certain goal within a certain amount of time,
if i came across sarcastically perhaps it is because i couldn't figure out which side of the issue you were on, you have a knack for that, no harm meant

i have been reading up on the electoral college that we have set up, inspired by the results of last years election, and i think it is the most antiquated, if not most useless system and sorry excuse for a democracy/ democratic state, IMO don't want to change the subject o this thread so i will cut it short, perhaps a new thread?

hey mindchild
you said a mouthful my friend and i have to agree with you on your observation,
it truly is a shame that most of us were deprived of a formal education in our younger years when we were supposed to be receiving one, and it is even sadder that some of the patterns that we were molded into take so long to shatter,
i speak mainly for myself when i say that most of what i have learned after leaving the borg, i had to pick up on my own, although i know that i am not the only one and that many may feel the same,
the feeling of being deprived and manipulated and basically having to start over late in life, is truly difficult at times, the feeling of being out of place when current events kick in and and have nothing to say, which is a feeling i have experienced many times in my life, in my humble opinion sucks royally,
but on the other side of the coin, the way i have come to see it there are also many here who are aware of what is going on and have decided to not look back and instead deal with the demons of the past as the show up (i personally am one of those), sometimes i wonder why i bother returning to this board, and sometimes suzi will ask me the same, what is the point, and it comes down to this. . .
i know that i am not the only poster who feels and thinks the way i do, and i know that there are others here who at times are silent or simply lurking who may have similar views, if i get environmental or if i go off on a tangent when i post, i don't do it for the masses but for those who may be looking for something more than the typical 'survivor melodrama' which is often what we find here, primative reactions are understandable but intelligent conversation is appreciated, and the fact that those of us who have left have indeed done so, shows a sign of intelligence,
i went through my personal hell when i escaped the borg, and i am hoping to meet others that can relate, and are at the same place that i am, color me selfish,
we can't always sit back like victims and feel sorry for ourselves for what was done to us and for accepting the lies that we were fed,
justifying misery as easy of an escape avenue as it is, leads no where fast, to quote the smiths
difficult as it is we need to make the best of the time we have left and move on, and re-educate ourselves, it may not be the road for everyone, but for those who it is they know why they are there. . .
thanks for your comments mindchild

personally i would love to see Jesse Ventura run for president, i feel the man has conviction
and as for what can be done to help the environment? click on the link (up top) and follow it to send your local congress person the letter it takes you to, make our senators know that we want to preserve our earth and not tear into into and abuse it as we have done for so long, small steps at a time will help us in the end even if we are not the ones to benefit from it

Scorpion,
some people have a wide range of talents,
RR isn't the first actor turned politician/lobbyist,
just to name a few, Soni Bono, Clint Eastwood, Jesse Ventura, and a nameless jelly bean eating actor gone senile who took 2 terms in the 80s,
but as to the point of the original posting; it wasn't about who said it but what he was saying,
"don't be swayed by the current state of our country to pass laws that will hurt us rather than benefit us in the long run"
that is all the man is saying, nothing radical nor liberal nor extreme in any way, its a matter of preservation
big houses don't corrupt the environment
needless destruction of the eco system does, take that money and fund a better resource or a more productive solution with a more beneficial end result
larc
some of these 'liberals' are giving up TIME one of our most precious resources, something many are too reluctant to do
money supresses, to quote chris tucker though he directed the comment based at the medical field,
"the money is in the come back, that is where the dealer makes his money, not in the cure"
and btw i remember some french ambassador from my US history flying a kite with a key on it during a thunderstorm and getting zapped, believe it was Benjamin Franklin
bitter:

trashing a celebrity simply cause he/she has achieved that status, is truly sad
they have much more pull than an average joe who gets up and starts a rally and if these celebrities are willing to put in the time because they have accumulated enough to afford them the luxury of donating their time in order to possibly advance a worthwhile cause then more power to them, if they make sense then why not listen
